Hungarian Number Squares

Hungarian Number Squares are versatile tools that can be used for a variety of educational and recreational activities. Their origins are unclear but many believe they were used centuries ago in China and India before being introduced to Europe.

They offer a fun and engaging way to improve number sense skills, cognitive abilities, and problem-solving skills. It allows teachers and learners to focus on number composition (numbers within numbers). They are versatile and can be used in lots of different ways including: comparing, patterns, more than, less than, equivalence, games, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and much more.

This resources operates within 5 key principles:

  1. Making links and connections.

  2. Looking for patterns.

  3. Reasoning.

  4. Visualising.

  5. Multiple representations.

Using these principles, the Hungarian Number Squares resources allows teachers to draw attention to mathematical structures which allow children to master the composition of numbers (how numbers can be made up of numbers within a number).

Below are some examples of how the resource may be used as a planning tool, to snip tasks, display on walls or interactive boards and much more.
